The Surprising Cost of Being an Out of Shape Doctor
Sep 23, 2024Ever thought about what it costs to be out of shape and not at your ideal weight?
For me, it was at least $20,000.
How? Let me share a couple of examples.
In my 30s, I was carrying extra weight and one day, while picking up groceries, I threw out my back.
The pain was so intense I couldn’t stand back up. My husband had to roll over an office chair just so I could sit down.
I missed three shifts as an ER doctor, which cost me about $5-6K in lost income because we don’t get paid time off.
But that wasn’t the only cost.
For years, being out of shape left me feeling drained and less productive at work.
I saw fewer patients than my colleagues, which impacted my RVU bonuses, costing me another $15,000 or more over time.
There were potential future costs too: medications for cholesterol and diabetes, higher insurance premiums, and the constant expense of buying bigger clothes.
Beyond the financial toll, my sluggishness affected my interactions with my kids and my relationship with my husband and my confidence in life in general. I knew I wasn’t showing up as the best version of myself, either at home or at work.
I realized not taking control of my health was costing me BIG TIME and in every way.

When people say they can’t afford to pay a coach to help them lose weight, I tell them that investing in their health will make them feel more energetic, confident, and ultimately more successful in every way including financially.
That’s how important health is to the equation. Without health, it becomes so much more difficult to have wealth.
